Phosphorus and sediment erosion into lakes are not good.
We can decrease these inputs and help prolong the health of lakes.
Let’s consider some activities that can help:
Pump septic tanks every 3 to 5 years and properly
maintain the system.
Do not bathe, shampoo or wash boats, pets or other
objects in the lake with soap or phosphorous detergents.
Keep land clearing to a minimum and revegetate
bare areas to minimize erosion; keep the shore natural.
Do not use fertilizer within 25 feet of the lake shore.
Do not feed ducks or other aquatic animals.
Animal feces can cause e coli bacteria in the water.
Burnt brush and leaves near the shore dump nutrients
into the lake during the first rain. This is also true for grass clippings.
Purple Loosestrife has become an invasive plant in Millville Lake.
