Millville Lake Protective Association
3/1/01

Congratulations to all members of the Millville Lake Protective Association, we have received our 501 CS status as a charitable organization for the IRS. This means that your membership dues and any donations are tax deductible. Please keep this letter as proof of your membership for IRS purposes. We will work as an educational organization on Lake Protection and various community projects to retain this status.

We would like to thank all our members for joIning our organization. Together we can work to protect our lake.

We look forward to working together at future projects. The meeting on Nov 22, 2000, at the Salem-Derry Elks, went very well and much Information was gathered for protecting our lake from weed infestation.

Amy Smagula from New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services explained the weed watcher program and left information. If you would Iike to volunteer for this contact me for the information packet. Only a few hours would be needed for this program every few weekends in July and August to map weed species. The State has also put us on their list for extensive water testing and weed study this year.

Now, just a few words an upcoming projects.

1. Dam Repair: The town has accepted bids on the repair of the dam. They will draw down the lake below current level but will not drain the lake as they did In prevIous years. The town has not decided if the work will begin on March 1 or September 1. They will keep me advised. The complete project will be 45 - 90 days, depending on weather.

2. Earth Day Clean Up: At our meeting members discussed joining the Kilmartlns of Grove Ave. on their clean up of the area. We would like to expand it to the whole lake area. The Lake Associatlon will buy the trash bags and the town will pick up the filled bags the following Monday. We are looking for volunteers to help pick up the trash and debris in your area. We will use the town beach area for a staging area. Please contact me at 898-3516 or email at MillvilleLake@aol.com to sign up. The more volunteers the quicker the job. Also planned is the clean up of the Roy Family memorial at the town beach dedicated to the 7 members of the Roy family that perished in a fire. The town will haul the debris if we put it by the road side.

3. Fishing Derby: We are currently trying to schedule a fishing derby open to everybody as a way to promote our lake as a valuable water resource. There will be prizes for different age groups. The whole lake can be used to fish and a ranger will be on the lake to register your catch. All entrants under age14 must be accompanied by an adult for their protection. The beach area will be used as a staging area for sign-up and prize ceremony afterwards. If you have any ideas or suggestions on this derby please contact me.

4. Testing of Drinking Water: As you may know the Arlington Lake area has reported MTBe contamination In their drinking water. They are working with the town to get town water and we urge you to vote for this project In the coming election. As you may not know an amount of 6.0 PPB (parts per billion) has been found in our area in a community well. While this is under the State maximum contaminate level of 13 ppb, it is still of concern. We recommend and strongly urge you to have your water tested. You may contact the State DES Laboratory at 271-3445 or 271-3446 to arrange a test for your water sample. The cost is approx. $100.00 which is lower than most private labs. We are trying to map any contaminatIon in our lake area and provide this info to the town as they will provide town water as they are in the Arlington lake area. This we hope will ultimately lead to the Lakes Area Infrastructure Project (LAIP). The town Is still working on the LAIP and have been holding back and rescheduling the rebuilding of certain streets because they need upgrades or the sewer pipes to provide capacity for LAIP. If they rebuild these streets without sewer upgrade there would be a 5 year moratorium before they can be dug up again stalling the project even longer.

5. Legislative Action: We are looking for volunteers to contact our area senators, congressmen and reps on certain legislation concerning our lakes areas. All Information and phone numbers will be provided and you may contact them at your leisure.

6. Suggestions: Please contact me with any suggestions on community projects In our lake area that you think needs addressing. If the project is viable we will look for volunteers and any contacts in the town to get it done. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas or concerns.

Please remember, it takes all of us to protect our lake area.
